How do I know if a Luma through-floor lift is right for me?
If you or someone in your household finds stairs difficult, a home lift might be right for you. A home lift can make moving from one floor to another safer and easier. The Luma lift is a stylish and convenient alternative to a stairlift, especially if you want to take smaller mobility equipment with you when you travel to another floor.
What’s the benefit of a Savaria Luma home lift over a stairlift?
A Savaria Luma home lift and a stairlift both help you move from one floor to another without tackling the stairs, but they feel very different in the home.
A homelift isn’t placed on the stairs, so your staircase stays clear and unobstructed. All you need for the Luma lift is the right footprint and ceiling height, and then it can be installed almost anywhere in your home.
The Luma lift has a fully enclosed cabin, which some people prefer to travelling on a stairlift. It can easily integrate into your home, thanks to its compact, clean and modern design. The Luma through floor lift helps future-proof your home and supports ageing in place. You might not need mobility aids yet but, if you do in the future, you can take small mobility aids in your Luma lift, whereas this is not advisable on a stairlift.
A stairlift is generally a lower-cost option than a homelift and works well for many people. Stairlifts are easy to use, with simple controls, safety features and optional extras to make traveling more comfortable if this is preferred over a through floor lift.
Space & Construction
How much space does a Luma Home Lift require?
You only need a footprint of 956 mm by 1186 mm for the Luma through floor lift. The minimum ceiling height on the second floor is 2000 mm for the standard cabin, and 1905 mm for the shorter cabin.
How much space is inside the cabin of a Luma Home Lift?
The interior space of the Luma lift is 739 mm by 706 mm, with a ceiling height of 2000 mm for the standard cabin. The shorter cabin has a slightly lower ceiling of 1905 mm.
Even though the lift is compact, the clear acrylic cabin lets light in, making it feel spacious, open and airy.
Where can I install a Luma Home Lift?
Because the Savaria Luma through floor lift is self-supporting, the installation location is flexible. As long as you have the right footprint (956 mm by 1186 mm) and ceiling height (2000 mm for the standard cabin, and 1905 mm for the shorter cabin), the Luma can be placed virtually anywhere in your home. You can tuck it into a corner, put it in the hallway or make it a feature due to its compact design.

Can I order the Luma Home Lift with two doors?
Yes, the lift can be configured with one or two doors. The most suitable layout will depend on your floorplan. You may want to travel straight through the lift rather than turning around inside it; sometimes this is easier if you have a mobility aid.
Is the construction to prepare my home for the Luma lift costly?
In most cases, preparation for the installation of a Luma homelift is fairly simple and not very expensive compared with installing a traditional lift, which would need to sit within a lift shaft (a dedicated enclosure for the lift).
Typically, the work involves cutting the floor opening and reinforcing that area so it can support the lift. If you don’t already have a nearby power source, you may also need to have that added by an electrician.
Costs vary depending on the home but the building work is typically straightforward.
The Luma through floor lift also includes a metal trim that covers all joints around the floor opening, giving you a neat and premium finish. It covers the cut edges and is included as part of the Savaria installation.

Does the Luma Home Lift require planning permission in the UK?
No. The Luma lift is self-supporting and doesn’t require structural reinforcements, so planning permission is generally not needed in the UK. This means installation of the Luma homelift is simple, quick and brings minimal disruption to your home.
Installation
Installing the Luma lift is quicker than most home lifts. Most installs take around one day with a two-person team. Depending on travel, access, or any specifics of your home, please allow up to two days in total.
Operation
How is the Savaria Luma Home Lift powered?
The Luma home lift runs on batteries that are automatically charged through standard household power when the lift is parked. Because of this, the lift will still operate during a power cut and usually allows up to five journeys before the batteries need recharging.
Where is the motor located on the Luma Home Lift?
The Savaria Luma is a compact, modern through floor lift that saves space and fits discreetly into your home. The winding drum drive system sits on top of the cabin, out of the way, so no extra equipment needs to be housed or mounted anywhere in your home. This avoids unsightly cables too – everything is neat, tidy and hidden meaning the lift looks unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing.
Is the Savaria Luma Home Lift noisy?
No, the Luma homelift is designed to run very quietly. Its winding-drum drive system is known for its reliability and quiet operation. The drive system also features a soft start and stop feature so travel is smooth and comfortable. Noise from the lift will not be disruptive in your home.
Safety
What safety features does the Savaria Luma Home Lift have?
The Luma homelift is packed full of safety features. From One Touch Alert two-way voice communication so you can call someone from the lift if needed, to an emergency stop button and obstacle sensor system that stops the lift should it meet any obstruction, the Savaria Luma also has large backlit buttons and a stylish non-skid floor. Entry is easy with a full-sized door and sloped low-level access, avoiding any trip hazards.
What if someone walks under the lift while it is travelling down?
The Luma homelift is fitted with an obstacle sensor system, so it will stop immediately if it detects an obstruction. And for extra peace of mind, there’s an emergency stop button too, so you’re always in control.
What stops the lift from travelling too fast?
The Luma homelift travels at an average of 0.07 metres per second, gliding smoothly, safely and steadily for every trip. It also includes an overspeed arrestor to prevent it from travelling too fast.
Can you open the door when it’s moving?
No. The Luma through floor lift features an interlock system that prevents the door from opening when it’s moving. Once safely at the top or bottom landing, the door will unlock and can be opened.
In an emergency, can I open the Luma Home Lift?
Because the Luma home lift is battery powered, it will normally lower to the bottom landing even during a power cut. Once it reaches the landing, the door unlocks automatically so you can exit.
If for any reason, the door does not unlock, there is also a key to unlock the door from outside the lift.
